Most of the commercial and scientific attention on Sceletium tortuosum has historically centred on mesembrine, the alkaloid most associated with the plant's mood-elevating reputation. Research from Pérez-Ranea, de Ceglia, Fuentes-Ríos and colleagues has now turned to a less-studied corner of the plant's chemistry, isolating minor mesembrine-type alkaloids and identifying a new compound, normesembrenone, with anxiolytic-like activity in laboratory testing. Separately, a 2026 study published in Phytomedicine Plus by de Jong, van Niekerk and van der Kooy raises a quality-control concern directly relevant to anyone using kanna products for wellness purposes. The researchers found meaningful variation in mesembrine-alkaloid content between non-standardised kanna products and Zembrin, a patented, standardised commercial extract, with differences even detected across batches with different expiry dates. This matters practically. Two products both labelled as kanna extract may deliver substantially different alkaloid doses depending on whether they come from a standardised or non-standardised source.
